What are annuals?

Annual plants and flowers are planted and replaced each year. They complete their life cycle within one growing season, and typically last from spring to fall. Seeds are planted in the spring, and with proper care, will produce flowers over the course of the summer. Toward the end of the growing season, generally late summer or early fall, these annual flowers will yield seeds, signaling that the life cycle is complete. With the first few hard frosts of fall, they will die, and their seeds can then be replanted in the spring, continuing the cycle of growth.

Sunflowers: What says summer better than a big, beautiful sunflower? These bursts of sunshiney color put a smile on your face and hold their own in the hottest months in Memphis. Available in colors beyond the traditional bright yellow, sunflowers add easy accents to any place in your garden.

What are perennials?

Black-eyed Susans: These pretty gold flowers bloom for more than a month, usually beginning in late July or early August. They require next to no maintenance to grow in full sun, and are another favorite of butterflies and bees.

Spirea: One of the easiest flowering shrubs to grow, spireas are often used in perennial gardens. Blooming in late spring to midsummer, spirea flowers come in a wide range of colors, including pink, red, yellow, and white. Some types even have colorful fall foliage. Their size can range from 2 to 10 feet tall and wide, so make sure to plant it where it has plenty of room to grow. In the dead of winter it may have seemed like the cold days would never end, but now the warmer temperatures will be here sooner than we think. Green shoots will begin sprouting from the ground and buds will start forming on branches. The transition from winter to spring is a welcome change of seasons. As we wait for spring’s arrival, we can help give your landscape a head start. Sometimes it is easy to forget about landscaping maintenance during the winter months. The grass and weeds are not growing like they do in the spring and summer, and your property might be covered in snow during this time. While you might be tempted to just ignore your landscaping, and wait until spring arrives to deal with it then, that would be a mistake. You do not want your landscaping to fall too far behind. Pruning

Late winter is a great time to have us do some pruning in order to prepare your trees and shrubs for the upcoming warmer weather. Professional pruning will promote new growth in the year ahead. We will trim back limbs that have been allowed to grow too long or too thick. Pruning will reward you with great looking trees later in the year.

Lawn Check

We have had a lot of snow this winter, and one of the troubles your lawn faces at the onset of spring is snow mold, which becomes visible after heavy snowfalls. Thawing snow could reveal that your lawn has some snow mold. There are two main types of snow mold: pink and gray. They usually look like dead patches of grass with some fuzzy fungus on top. If you do notice some on your lawn, we will perform a combing process so the individual blades of grass can get some oxygen. This will help combat the snow mold. In addition, worm infestations in your lawn can lead to serious damage. It is important to let us treat this problem before these critters begin to thrive in the warmer weather.

Winter Recovery

Some branches or leaves of your evergreen bushes and shrubs may have died, so let us clean up the damaged plants around your property. They impede growth in the upcoming season, and we want to see your plants flourish in the upcoming season.

De-Winterizing

Adding some pre-emergent products to your lawn and garden beds prior to the weeds getting started for the year can put you ahead of the game. Using pre-emergents will keep weeds to a minimum. Big Cuts

Pruning vs Trimming

Two techniques used when taking care of gardens and landscape are pruning and trimming. Trimming usually applies to maintaining small shrubs or hedges, while horticulturists use pruning for trees and shrubs. While the terms can be used interchangeably, they utilize different types of equipment and have different times for implementation. The end result of trimming and pruning are healthy and aesthetically appealing trees, shrubs and hedges. Memphis Landscape has the knowledge and know how to help you keep your yard and treelines looking great!

Pruning

Pruning is necessary to prevent loose or dead branches from harming other plants or people. The tree’s flowers and fruit are allowed to flourish when these branches are removed. Pruning is meant to stimulate the tree, not stunt its growth. The elimination of diseased or pest infested branches are other reasons to have your trees professionally pruned. Pruning can also be used for for aesthetic purposes. Pollarding and topiary, two forms of pruning, can cause trees to take on unnatural forms. Topiary is the art of shaping trees into animal or geometric shapes. Pollarding is the practice of annual pruning to produce new shoots each year.

Pruning is required to remove dead and dying branches to maintain health and safety on mature trees. This type of pruning is referred to as cleaning. The removal of live branches to reduce density, known as thinning, significantly reduces wind resistance and subsequent storm damage. Thinning should only be done on trees where the crown is too dense and only by a trained arborist from someone like Memphis Landscape . As many branches as possible should be left on the interior crown, with thinning focused on the outer portions of the canopy. In some instances, the crown or individual branches require reduction in length to improve the form and shape of the plant, to compensate for structural weaknesses, and to eliminate interference with objects and structures. The process of pruning lower branches, known as raising, is used to increase the amount of light for turf grass and ground cover beneath the crown of a tree. Homeowners often overlook the structural pruning of young trees. Trees evolved in forests where they tend to grow straight and lose lower branches due to competition for light. Many species tend to develop multiple stems/leaders that are more prone to failure when they’re planted in a landscape full of sun. Weak attachments that fail later in the life of the plant are due to the lower branches growing at the same rate as the terminal leader. Pruning trees when they’re young and growing quickly is critical to ensuring a strong framework for future growth. We focus on maintaining a single dominant stem unless multiple stem clumps are specifically desired. Branches are pruned to keep their size proportional to the stem diameter at their point of attachment. Some branches are removed to ensure adequate spacing between permanent scaffold limbs as the tree grows. A natural open grown form typical of the species is maintained to provide the natural shape of the tree.

As more homeowners grow their own apples, pears, citrus, and other fruit bearing plants in their gardens, fruit tree pruning is becoming increasingly popular. Trimming

While pruning focuses on safety and a tree’s health, shrubs and hedges are trimmed for aesthetic purposes. However, you should have us trim your shrubs at least twice per year to prevent excessive overgrowth from happening because it will reduce the amount of moisture and light a shrub receives, damaging the plant.

Hedges create a natural looking boundary instead of looking at walls, fences and other artificial structures. There’s always maintenance involved in anything worthwhile and that includes trimming hedges to keep them neat. A hedge can be trimmed from one to three times a year depending on the species and styling requirement. Trimming is an art, as you can create bare patches or trim too much off which can be detrimental to the survival of the plant, which is why it’s important to rely on professionals like Memphis Landscape .

Evergreens such as Yew, Lawson Cypress, Leyland Cypress, Laurel, Bay, Pyracantha, Box, Privet and Holly can be trimmed all through the summer and up to late September, depending on weather conditions. What is backflow and how can it be dangerous? Simply put, backflow is the unwanted reversal of the flow of water. The flow goes back to its origins, rather than continuing to its intended destination. Backflow is dangerous because it can allow drinking water to become contaminated.

2. What is a backflow preventer?

Knowing the danger of backflow, it’s important to prevent this potential contamination. A backflow preventer is a mechanical plumbing device installed in a plumbing system that simply prevents water from flowing backwards. When installed correctly, regularly tested and maintained, a backflow preventer can reliably prevent contamination of water due to backflow.

3. What is backflow testing?

Backflow testing is simply testing a backflow preventer to verify its operation. A backflow preventer is a mechanical device, and, like all mechanical devices, will eventually fail. The test itself is very simple. Every testable backflow preventer has built-in test ports to allow for easy annual testing. All water downstream of the backflow preventer must be turned off in order to perform the test. A technician will then connect and run a test kit to the backflow preventer to verify its operation. Simple as that.

Leaf Removal Memphis, TN

With fall upon us leaves are falling and covering your lawn. Leaf removal is essential to ensuring that your yard stays lush and healthy throughout the fall and winter months. We have several ways to deal with leaves, we can either mulch them back into the yard or we can blow, rake and dispose of the leaves. If you are a current Memphis Landscape client fall Clean-up is not included in our basic service, so please let us know how we need to know how you would like to handle your fall leaf removal.

We can either:

–Mow as usual, mulching the leaves back into the lawn, allowing them to break down naturally.

–Rake and dispose of the leaves. All leaves are hauled off and turned into compost.
If you wish to have either of these services performed, we will be happy to provide you with a free quote.
