Annual plants and flowers are planted and replaced each year. They complete their life cycle within one growing season, and typically last from spring to fall. Seeds are planted in the spring, and with proper care, will produce flowers over the course of the summer. Toward the end of the growing season, generally late summer or early fall, these annual flowers will yield seeds, signaling that the life cycle is complete. With the first few hard frosts of fall, they will die, and their seeds can then be replanted in the spring, continuing the cycle of growth.

        Marigolds:

These well-known bright orange beauties bloom continuously all summer long, and are extremely easy to grow. The seeds from these flowers can easily be found and saved for the following spring, and as a big benefit for us Mid-Southerners, they are natural mosquito repellants as well!

        Geraniums:

With a wide variety of colors to choose from, geraniums are especially attractive to butterflies and bees. Unlike some annuals, these plants can be brought indoors during the winter months. With good care and careful maintenance, they can be enjoyed indoors and out year after year.

What says summer better than a big, beautiful sunflower? These bursts of sunshiney color put a smile on your face and hold their own in the hottest months in Memphis. Available in colors beyond the traditional bright yellow, sunflowers add easy accents to any place in your garden.

Easily adapted to flower beds or containers, these vibrant flowers can grow quite tall, and are continuous bloomers. Keeping them cut back is important for the longevity of the plants, so you can expect to enjoy frequent bouquets.

Perennial plants and flowers are a gift that keeps on giving year after year, as long as simple maintenance is carried out. Some are short-lived, lasting only a few years, but they can spread by seed or through underground rhizomes, with the offspring replacing the original plant without any effort on your part. Other annuals will last for as long as they are cared for.

Some perennials that we love and often recommend include:

        Hostas:

Seen in countless southern gardens, this hearty plant is a perfect accent for any flowers blooming in your garden or beds. Hostas are extremely low maintenance plants, have many different varieties, and grow well even in the heat and humidity of the Mid-South.

        Daylilies:

A “sure bet” perennial if ever there was one, daylilies thrive in a wide variety of soil conditions, are generally immune to most diseases and pests, and bloom faithfully for years with very little attention. Daylily flowers open in the morning and die in the evening, but each stem carries many buds, so the plant stays in bloom for several weeks at a time.

        Sedum:

A reliable grower for your garden, sedum is a perennial succulent that blooms early in the spring and often lasts into late summer or sometimes through the end of fall. They’re drought tolerant, a helpful feature for plants in our region, and come in a multitude of shapes, sizes, and varieties.

These pretty gold flowers bloom for more than a month, usually beginning in late July or early August. They require next to no maintenance to grow in full sun, and are another favorite of butterflies and bees.

One of the easiest flowering shrubs to grow, spireas are often used in perennial gardens. Blooming in late spring to midsummer, spirea flowers come in a wide range of colors, including pink, red, yellow, and white. Some types even have colorful fall foliage. Their size can range from 2 to 10 feet tall and wide, so make sure to plant it where it has plenty of room to grow. These beautiful bushes are wonderful accents to any garden and are very low-maintenance.

Planting both annuals and perennials in your outdoor space can add dramatic bursts of color to highlight your landscaping. Because they often bloom at different times, you’ll often have flowers to enjoy from spring right to fall. Maintaining perennials along with your annuals also means less replanting each spring.

Regular landscape maintenance is a big job that requires consistent attention. Once all of the plants starts to grow and the critters and pests return, just getting started on this year’s landscaping plans becomes very labor intensive. Preparing for the warmer months now can effectively eliminate many of the lawn care and landscaping problems that might pose a challenge over the course of the year.

When the snow from our big winter storm melted, it left in its wake a lot of debris built up from last fall. Sticks, leaves, broken branches, dead plants, and garbage will all need to be cleaned up and disposed of properly as part of early spring lawn care. You can spend your weekend bagging them up for the curb, or you can call us at

Sometimes overlooked when discussing spring lawn cleanup, aerating the lawn can help to rejuvenate your property’s soil and grass. It encourages new growth and helps heal any areas damaged by compaction or heavy use. Aeration means creating small holes in the sod and removing plugs of soil which allows nutrients, air, and water to reach the roots.

we focus on older growth and anything that looks damaged or diseased – this encourages the plant to put energy into new growth and helps to keep your plants from growing too large. Removing any unhealthy growth reduces the potential for disease and keeps the flora healthier.

If you want to prepare your landscape for spring, edging is a must. Edging helps define the line between your landscaping and lawn. Edging prevents your grass from growing into your beds, and keep them both looking neater. Clean edging gives your landscape a sharp and well manicured appearance.

Instilling preventative measures that deal with common wildlife pests will keep your landscape looking its best, and also save you a lot of trouble over the course of the year. Insects like ants, grub worms, mosquitoes, wasps, and other stinging insects create headaches in their own unique ways.

          Effective Weed Solutions

Weeds are the ultimate headache and a great reason to be proactive about early spring lawn care and landscaping maintenance. They begin growing and can quickly take over.

Pre-emergent herbicides act as a barrier to potential weeds already lurking in your existing beds by inhibiting them from germinating. Applying it before mulch in early spring can make all the difference.

          Mulch

Heavy mulching is a great way to bury weed seed and tiny weeds before they become big enough to cause problems. Unfortunately, weeds that are already mature likely will not be affected by this technique because they have built up the resources to grow right through the mulch layer. Mulch is a great way to keep plants watered because it locks in the moisture at the base of the plant. Mulching around plants, trees and in gardens does not just look good—it can mean the difference between healthy, vibrant plants, and plants that struggle to stay alive.

Fertilizing helps repair damaged spots in your lawn, and can add a much needed boost to your small trees, shrubs, and perennials. When we fertilize,

also seeds the lawn for lush, consistent growth.

Composting is a fantastic way to eliminate yard waste, take care of the environment, save money on gardening, and reduce waste disposal costs. In addition to fertilizer, you can use compost to feed your landscape plants and gardens. Start a compost pile now, or add to the one you currently have going. Turn over and expose the interior of the pile in the early spring so it will be ready when your gardens are in full bloom.

          Transplanting

Any new plants and trees that you want to incorporate into your property’s landscape should be transplanted now. Planting in early spring allows the roots to firmly establish themselves, offering enough time to strengthen and grow into the earth before the next cold season begins.

In the dead of winter it may have seemed like the cold days would never end, but now the warmer temperatures will be here sooner than we think. Green shoots will begin sprouting from the ground and buds will start forming on branches. The transition from winter to spring is a welcome change of seasons. As we wait for spring’s arrival, we can help give your landscape a head start. Sometimes it is easy to forget about landscaping maintenance during the winter months. The grass and weeds are not growing like they do in the spring and summer, and your property might be covered in snow during this time. While you might be tempted to just ignore your landscaping, and wait until spring arrives to deal with it then, that would be a mistake. You do not want your landscaping to fall too far behind. So call us at

Late winter is a great time to have us do some pruning in order to prepare your trees and shrubs for the upcoming warmer weather. Professional pruning will promote new growth in the year ahead. We will trim back limbs that have been allowed to grow too long or too thick. Pruning will reward you with great looking trees later in the year.

We have had a lot of snow this winter, and one of the troubles your lawn faces at the onset of spring is snow mold, which becomes visible after heavy snowfalls. Thawing snow could reveal that your lawn has some snow mold. There are two main types of snow mold: pink and gray. They usually look like dead patches of grass with some fuzzy fungus on top. If you do notice some on your lawn, we will perform a combing process so the individual blades of grass can get some oxygen. This will help combat the snow mold. In addition, worm infestations in your lawn can lead to serious damage. It is important to let us treat this problem before these critters begin to thrive in the warmer weather.

Did you have us make preparations for the winter freeze last fall, such as winterizing your sprinkler system? If so, now is a good time to have us come out and restart your system for you. We will drain and test your irrigation system to make sure no problems have developed while the system was laying dormant. You do not want to get into the middle of the warm weather only to find out that your sprinkler system is no longer working, so do what you can now to get ready in advance!

Adding some pre-emergent products to your lawn and garden beds prior to the weeds getting started for the year can put you ahead of the game. Using pre-emergents will keep weeds to a minimum. We can also add a slow-release fertilizer for you, so your lawn is full and lush all spring and summer long.

Do you have any plants which have outgrown their space and need to be cut back significantly? These kinds of cuts are similar to pruning, but they are more drastic in measure. This is a good time of year to cut back on some of your trees and shrubs that have taken over a walkway or patio, as they will begin sprouting new growth in the months ahead.

February and March are the best time to install hardscapes. Most gardens benefit greatly from having one. Paths, patios, water features, and fireplaces help make a garden not only more usable but also beautiful. If you already have hardscapes like sidewalks, walkways, and driveways—they have taken a beating during the cold weather. Extreme temperature changes can cause concrete to expand and crack. If you have had to use a lot of salt to melt ice and snow, the excessive salt accumulation can wear away at surfaces. If it looks like they need a little repair, now is the time to do it!

Pruning vs Trimming

Two techniques used when taking care of gardens and landscape are pruning and trimming. Trimming usually applies to maintaining small shrubs or hedges, while horticulturists use pruning for trees and shrubs. While the terms can be used interchangeably, they utilize different types of equipment and have different times for implementation. The end result of trimming and pruning are healthy and aesthetically appealing trees, shrubs and hedges.

Pruning is necessary to prevent loose or dead branches from harming other plants or people. The tree’s flowers and fruit are allowed to flourish when these branches are removed. Pruning is meant to stimulate the tree, not stunt its growth. The elimination of diseased or pest infested branches are other reasons to have your trees professionally pruned. Pruning can also be used for for aesthetic purposes. Pollarding and topiary, two forms of pruning, can cause trees to take on unnatural forms. Topiary is the art of shaping trees into animal or geometric shapes. Pollarding is the practice of annual pruning to produce new shoots each year.

Pruning is required to remove dead and dying branches to maintain health and safety on mature trees. This type of pruning is referred to as cleaning. The removal of live branches to reduce density, known as thinning, significantly reduces wind resistance and subsequent storm damage. Thinning should only be done on trees where the crown is too dense and only by a trained arborist from someone like

In some instances, the crown or individual branches require reduction in length to improve the form and shape of the plant, to compensate for structural weaknesses, and to eliminate interference with objects and structures. The process of pruning lower branches, known as raising, is used to increase the amount of light for turf grass and ground cover beneath the crown of a tree. The professionals at

Homeowners often overlook the structural pruning of young trees. Trees evolved in forests where they tend to grow straight and lose lower branches due to competition for light. Many species tend to develop multiple stems/leaders that are more prone to failure when they’re planted in a landscape full of sun. Weak attachments that fail later in the life of the plant are due to the lower branches growing at the same rate as the terminal leader. Pruning trees when they’re young and growing quickly is critical to ensuring a strong framework for future growth. We focus on maintaining a single dominant stem unless multiple stem clumps are specifically desired. Branches are pruned to keep their size proportional to the stem diameter at their point of attachment. Some branches are removed to ensure adequate spacing between permanent scaffold limbs as the tree grows. A natural open grown form typical of the species is maintained to provide the natural shape of the tree.

can also develop and maintain formal pruning styles including pollarding, espalier, pleaching, and topiary. As more homeowners grow their own apples, pears, citrus, and other fruit bearing plants in their gardens, fruit tree pruning is becoming increasingly popular. Vista pruning, which is the judicious removal of branches to enhance a specific view from a defined location, is performed for homes with a river or lake view.

can help you tidy up your small shrub or hedge’s appearance by removing overgrown branches. While pruning focuses on safety and a tree’s health, shrubs and hedges are trimmed for aesthetic purposes. However, you should have us trim your shrubs at least twice per year to prevent excessive overgrowth from happening because it will reduce the amount of moisture and light a shrub receives, damaging the plant.

Hedges create a natural looking boundary instead of looking at walls, fences and other artificial structures. There’s always maintenance involved in anything worthwhile and that includes trimming hedges to keep them neat. A hedge can be trimmed from one to three times a year depending on the species and styling requirement. Trimming is an art, as you can create bare patches or trim too much off which can be detrimental to the survival of the plant, which is why it’s important to rely on professionals like

Evergreens such as Yew, Lawson Cypress, Leyland Cypress, Laurel, Bay, Pyracantha, Box, Privet and Holly can be trimmed all through the summer and up to late September, depending on weather conditions. Deciduous hedges like Beech, Hawthorn, Hornbeam and Hazel are trimmed annually after flowering, between June and September.

The required frequency for pruning or trimming varies among plant species. Spring flowering trees should be pruned immediately after their blooming cycle, usually during late June. Summer flowering trees should be pruned in the winter and spring months. A shrub or hedge’s appearance dictates when it should be trimmed, rather than its health or flowering cycles, but you will want

, we know the trends for 2018 will emphasize finding pleasure in one’s own garden— from sharing a meal with loved ones in a relaxing place you’ve created, growing new and exciting foods you’ve never attempted, or having an area that wildlife can seek refuge in.

          Embrace the small garden

While the small garden itself is not a new concept, there has been substantial progress in how they’re designed. Even the smallest of gardens can prove useful and attractive. The more popular ways to make the most of a small garden are:

          Multipurpose features

Everything in a small garden should have multiple uses. Take for example a concrete fire feature. It works as a bold statement that runs through the space, as a curb for the edge of the deck, as a planter, as a collector of water from downspouts, as a seat wall, and at the end of the day it turns into a fire feature.

          Container combinations

Containers are some of the best ways to explore and appreciate combinations. Plants are exquisite on their own, but their assets are magnified when placed in a context that complements texture, color, and structure.

          Alfresco dining

For many years it seems the outdoor dining space was located near the kitchen or just off the house. These days people are willing to carry their plates just a little further, as dining spaces are being pushed deeper into the garden. Having an all-inclusive destination within the landscape immerses people in the ambience. It allows guests to see more of your garden and makes for a more luxurious experience.

A few tips for creating the ultimate outdoor dining destination:

          Place a priority on craftsmanship

It’s easy to forget that people still make things by hand while we’re surrounded by mass produced products. Next time you add a structure or other element to your property, we hope you’ll seek out an artisan. Having an artisanal arbor in your garden can add much needed intimacy. Or a handcrafted playhouse will add whimsy and enchantment, turning your garden into a magical escape.

Helping to restore habitat at home

Habitat loss is responsible for not only the decline of bees and butterflies, but also for that of turtle, frogs, and even birds. Expanding cities and sprawling suburbs were designed for convenience and aesthetics, with little thought to the needs of wildlife which resulted in dwindling habitats. The many needs of our animal neighbors can be met with convenient, beautiful landscapes— and Memphis Landscape is here to help!

Adjusting plant selections and redesigning gardens can better support local wildlife. Here are a few takeaways for creating a habitat garden:

          Experiment with what you grow

Gardeners love to try new things. We predict continued experimentation with new plants, and the way that they are showcased. Here are a few ways to add some botanical variety to your garden or home:

          Grow Unusual Edibles:

Make your veggie garden reflect this trend and try a few new-to-you crops by acquiring seeds from community gardens, seed companies, and seed swaps. For example, try some

          Get Creative with Houseplants:

Besides just a pothos or ficus in a corner, think of houseplants as integral design elements in your private sanctuaries, fulfilling the same roles they do in the garden outside. They lead the eye, create focal points, provide repetition and contrast, frame views, and lend texture, color, and form.

          Cultivate a Succulent Collection:

The gardening public often thought of succulents as cactus or jade, and dismissed the entire category as too spiny or common. Today, people everywhere cultivate all kinds of succulents. The plants like fresh air, sunlight, warmth, and dryness. These exotic plants are available at your local nursery or via mail order.

A fence is the most common method for enclosing a garden. Fences have practical purposes, to contain pets or prevent trespassing, but they aren’t always the most attractive solution. The new style to enclose gardens are with lush plantings that are attractive and welcoming, yet offer privacy— and Memphis Landscape is available to help you with any enclosure you’d like.

There’s a lot more thought being put into winter landscapes. An empty space is a dreary landscape, no matter how much someone loves snow. Dazzling colors and sophisticated textures can enliven gardens during the dormant season. Consider the views from a window where you spend a fair amount of time. Select plant combinations that marry color, texture, and toughness. The contrast of dark branches, bright green conifers, and fiery red osier is an obvious and excellent strategy. Look for the following in plants for winter:

Visit world renowned gardens for inspiration. There are specific trips and incredible local tours planned just for gardening enthusiasts. Tours are available of both private and grand public gardens. You can tour villas and palaces with like-minded travelers who share your passion for garden design and nature. Consider the essential garden destinations in England, Ireland, France, Italy, South Africa & New Zealand. There are also nature trips to biodiversity hotspots like Belize and Costa Rica.

You can experience the transformative power of gardens much closer to home if traveling abroad isn’t in the cards for you. The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program opens the gates to over 300 private gardens in 18 states. You will see your own garden with new eyes when you return home.

Memphis Mowing & Lawn Maintenance

It's the middle of February here in the Mid-South, but you'd never know it by some of the weather we've been having lately! With temperatures well above normal for this time of year, we're already thinking about the best ways to prepare our lawns for the sweltering summer we're sure to have.

In Memphis, the biggest lawn care seasons are

          winter and summer.

In order to prepare your lawn for the humid, steamy months ahead, spring lawn care is a must.

Here are a few ways to give your lawn a good start for the greenest lawn on the block!

        Overseeding

Spring lawn care in the South usually starts with

          overseeding

. This is when you sow in a different variety of grass than what grows naturally out of your lawn. Many property owners will do this to help protect grass and make it grow green during the cold months. If you overseed the grass with

          cool season varieties

before winter arrives, your lawn will be protected from the harshest effects of our dry, cold winters. Without overseeing, the warm season grass commonly found throughout the Mid-South will turn brown and dormant.

If you overseeded your lawn before winter, you can help prepare it for the spring season by:

         If you

          didn’t

overseed your lawn before the spring, here are some tips that you can follow before spring truly arrives:

Spring lawn care in Memphis is generally focused on preparing it to handle the

          extreme heat of summer

. Fertilizing, watering, and weed control should be done carefully to arm the grass against that heat while not overburdening it with excess chemicals.

        The benefits of landscape design

The benefits of professional landscape design are many and varied! A well-designed landscape can help cut your summer and winter energy costs, protect your home from winter wind and summer sun,

          and

help control noise and air pollution.

Having a unique, creative, and visually appealing flow throughout your garden design will increase not only the enjoyment of your home and outdoor area, but the actual square footage of valuable, usable space.

While it isn’t necessarily a primary reason for professional landscaping design, “curb appeal” will

          add to your property’s value

. With comprehensive planning and professional installation, outdoor living areas can be an excellent investment. Studies have shown that thoughtfully developed outdoor spaces can

increase the value of a home

Winter Landscaping Projects in Memphis

This past week, Memphis has seen wind chills in the single digits, so we know that landscaping is probably the last thing on your mind! But if you’re starting to feel a little bit of cabin fever set in, there are plenty of

           winter landscaping projects

you can take on to prepare for the warmer months ahead. From general lawn care to elements of design, we’ve put together a handful of ideas you can implement now to give you a healthier yard once the flowers and showers of spring show up.

         Here in the

          MidSouth

, we’re blessed with an abundance of beautiful trees. But with that beauty comes a whole lot of leaves falling once fall arrives! A lawn that’s covered in leaves, sticks, and other debris will keep the vulnerable grass blades below from receiving the sunlight they need. This can cause problems with your lawn’s overall growth and health.

Taking a few hours every weekend to rake up and remove leaves and debris will keep your lawn from becoming dull, brown, and patchy. As an added bonus, you’ll get yourself some

          fresh air

and some much needed vitamin D!

        Trim Trees and Shrubs

If you have any hostas, peonies, or daisies hanging out around your porch or your yard, you might consider trimming them now. These kinds of perennial plants do well when they’re pruned in the dormant months of winter. Winter is also a great time to prune your shrubs and hedges, as well as evergreen and deciduous trees.

         Be sure you’re

          pruning your trees properly

, though. Inspect any trees beforehand and observe all safety precautions. If the tree is especially large, or the branches are in an awkward spot, we recommended you

          hire a professional

         .

        Mulching

Adding mulch earlier in the winter will help shield the ground from the season’s cold winds. Clear your planting beds of leaves and any other debris, then spread the mulch down about 1.5-2 inches thick. Take care to not place the mulch too close to the trunk of the shrub, tree, or plant, though, as this can

          trap moisture and cause rotting

         .

        Protect Early Blooming Flowers

There are some plants that tend to bloom earlier in the year, such as rhododendrons, poppies, camellias, and daphne. Memphis is known for its cold snaps well into March, so if you’re worried about these types of flowers staying warm through our weird weather,

          stake them for stability

and then cover them with burlap for warmth. This will keep them toasty warm until the true sunny springtime days return!

        Add Exciting Features

Let’s face it, just about everybody’s yard looks a little sad and empty over the winter. Combat those boring blues by adding a pop of color with details or some sculptural eye candy! To keep your lawn from looking bleak and barren in the dead of winter, you’ll want to choose elements that aren’t living, and are therefore not susceptible to the cold.

Walkways, water features, sculptures, and seating

can brighten your garden without relying on sunshine or warmth.

If you’d prefer to keep it natural, plant an evergreen trees or shrubs with berries to add some color and vibrancy to the yard. Doing this early in the season using a hardy specimen will give you the best results.

What do you think? Can we finally say it’s fall in Memphis? Temperatures are cooler, Christmas is quickly approaching, and the leaves have started turning at last. They’re also beginning to fall, which can leave a big mess in your yard. That’s why

Planning for next year’s planting might not the first thing you think of when cooler weather hits. But one of the best ways to successfully maintain your yard year-round is a thorough fall cleanup. By removing dying flowers as you see them, keeping leaves raked and shrubs pruned back, you can keep you garden neat and tidy until springtime.

Flower and landscape beds are easy to maintain in the summer months. However, in the fall, leaves from nearby trees drop, the weather turns cooler, and rainy days increase. This can cause mold, which can damage your mulch and plants, and even affect allergies. Bed cleaning protects your plants and your soil.
3 Benefits of Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting has been growing in popularity for some time. It impacts the safety, security, and appearance of your home. Not only that, homes with landscape lighting display the amenities of your yard while also potentially increasing the overall market value of your property.

        1. Improving the appearance of your home and property

          Adding professional landscape lighting

definitely increases the curb appeal of your home. Soft lighting in a dark outdoor environment can be magical, with a warm, inviting glow. It can create mood, romance, and drama, and interest to any setting.

Show off recent home improvements with effectively-placed lighting! Or, if you’re selling your house and haven’t had much luck, highlighting both the interior and exterior of your property can be attractive to potential buyers.

In fact, a growing number of homeowners are “nightscaping”, a hot trend in outdoor home improvement that capitalizes on this magical lighting. Lighting really can be one of the most important aspects of landscaping, even though it’s often overlooked or underdone.

        2. Increased Safety and Functionality

Your walkway serves a purpose at all times of day, even after the sun sets. Landscape lighting can help prevent common accidents that are easily avoidable, like tripping over a poorly lit path. Adequate lighting also provides additional safety for anyone entering the home after dark.

For pool owners, installing lights around your swimming pool is an added safety precaution that’s

          definitely

According to data from a recent FBI Crime Report, a burglary occurs in the United States every 15 seconds. Although a good home security system is generally the first line of defense in preventing home intrusions, landscape lighting can discourage intruders from even approaching your property. Not many burglars want to be identified trespassing on your well-lit property!

Summer Landscaping to Beat the Memphis Heat

Summer heat will leave you dripping with sweat and brimming with discomfort if left unchecked. We might be almost into September, but you know that Memphis heat isn’t going anywhere anytime soon! So don’t let the sun’s unjust punishment reign over your own property when plenty of options exist for cooling your yard, opening it up for all kinds of summer fun and relaxation. Here are four landscaping options that’ll have you leaned back in the shade, sipping a tall glass of iced tea in no time:

        Pergolas

Okay, so planting a shade tree might not give you

          immediate

relief, but your future self will definitely thank present you for planting a nice poplar or oak. Nuttall, or pin oaks, are said to be the fastest growing oak trees and provide an expansive, luscious canopy ripe for sitting under on hot August days. They thrive in Memphis’s climate, so they’ll grow fast and strong with proper care. Also, they look wonderful, with outstretched limbs swathed in deep-green leaves that turn to a burning red in the fall.

        Awninged Patios

        Pools

The previous summer-beating solutions are meant to shield you from the sun, but a pool’s a different animal entirely. I don’t have to explain how fun a pool is for most everyone; it’s a destination that provides both entertainment and relaxation in one. What many people don’t realize is that they can actually be an asset in terms of landscaping. An above- or in-ground pool with a bit of shrubbery and/or rockwork can really turn
your backyard into a summer true oasis.

A good pergola provides the same functional benefits of a gazebo while boasting more versatility of style and, often, a more reasonable price-tag. Most come with removable textile roofs to provide comprehensive shade when needed, and easy storage without disassembly of the entire pergola structure. This allows you to keep the pergola up year-round without worrying about it getting rained on or taken away in the wind. Also, we think they just look cool.

Patios are the king of features when it comes to outdoor entertaining. Imagine cooking out with a group of close friends, all gathered around the grill enjoying cold drinks and a breeze. This can’t really happen without an awning to provide some respite from the sun. There’re tons of options at all kinds of price points, so an awinged patio is certainly something to be considered!

When selling a house in the Memphis area, you’ll be competing to be seen amidst the well-manicured lawns of swanky midtown neighborhoods. While this can certainly be intimidating for anyone selling a property, it’s important to note that landscaping is well worth the time and effort when considering your return on investment.

          One Virginia Tech study

showed that a yard with a “sophisticated design”–in other words, great Memphis curb appeal–can increase the value of a home by up to 42%.

        Improving Your Memphis Curb Appeal

Contrary to what you might think, a sophisticated landscape doesn’t have to break the bank and can be achieved with a few simple techniques. These 5 things can dramatically improve your Memphis curb appeal.

        1. Greenery

Potential homebuyers want to be able to identify with your property, but nobody wants to spend hours every week maintaining a needy landscape. Because of this, the face of your home needs to have a magnetic personality without too much upkeep. A few simple changes—the addition of shrubbery and low-maintenance flowers, along with the trimming or removal of overhanging trees—can go a long way towards creating impressive Memphis curb appeal that attracts buyers.

        2. Trees, Trees, and More Trees

A nice, shady tree does wonders in regards to increasing the resale value of your home. Real estate agents almost universally agree that good landscaping can help you seal a sale faster, and planting trees is one of the simplest ways to achieve this! A few good shade trees can help boost the value of your home by up to 28%, according to John Harris, a leading landscape economist.

        3. Fresh Sod

Dark, rich sod can give any garden a healthy look. Besides the obvious benefit it’ll provide for your plants, the deep color provides a great contrast to your lawn and flowers. It’s as easy as heading to the nearest hardware store to add a great undertone to your home’s landscape.

        4. Flowers and Shrubbery Around the Mailbox

For most properties the mailbox is the closest thing to the street, so there’s a great chance it’ll be noticed even before the home you’ve been working hard on. A mailbox that accents your home’s style—or simply planting a classic jet black one—will have potential buyers envisioning themselves receiving their own mail at their brand new home. Also important to consider is the area directly surrounding the mailbox; flowers and other greenery can work wonders in adding a touch of sophistication.

        5. Accent the Porch

A few inexpensive rocking chairs or benches on the front porch can work wonders. By picking out a common accent color and rolling with it, you’ll be able to tie everything together into a cohesive composition. Don’t be afraid to be bold here; if you don’t like the way a certain piece of furniture turned out, you can always use it elsewhere. Succulents and other plants look great here, too.

With these simple techniques, you’ll leave everyone who’s laid eyes on your home with a great, lasting impression. By allowing potential buyers to imagine themselves living amongst the thoughtful handiwork, you’ll drastically increase the probability of an outcome featuring two happy parties.

        1. What is backflow?

What is backflow and how can it be dangerous? Simply put, backflow is the unwanted reversal of the flow of water. The flow goes back to its origins, rather than continuing to its intended destination. Backflow is dangerous because it can allow drinking water to become contaminated.

        2. What is a backflow preventer?

Knowing the danger of backflow, it’s important to prevent this potential contamination. A backflow preventer is a mechanical plumbing device installed in a plumbing system that simply prevents water from flowing backwards. When installed correctly, regularly tested and maintained, a backflow preventer can reliably prevent contamination of water due to backflow.

        3. What is backflow testing?

Backflow testing is simply testing a backflow preventer to verify its operation. A backflow preventer is a mechanical device, and, like all mechanical devices, will eventually fail. The test itself is very simple. Every testable backflow preventer has built-in test ports to allow for easy annual testing. All water downstream of the backflow preventer must be turned off in order to perform the test. A technician will then connect and run a test kit to the backflow preventer to verify its operation. Simple as that.

        4. Why is backflow testing so important?

The presence of backflow might not be detected until it’s too late–until contaminated water has been consumed! This is why skipping backflow testing can be so dangerous. Most states and counties list backflow testing requirements in their plumbing codes, so it’s important to check on your local requirements. However, testing yearly is good practice to prevent backflow and possible contamination.

        5. What is the backflow preventer failure rate?

Many elements impact the lifespan of a backflow preventer device, such as regularity of use, water pressure, water quality, and environment. When tested, about 5% of devices will display a problem, but most problems are simple. Simple problems can be due to cut seals, broken springs, or worn O-rings, whereas more serious problems, such as shattered poppets or cracked castings, are typically caused by exposure to freezing temperatures.

        6. Do I have to be present for the test?

As long as the backflow preventer is outside, you do not have to be present for the test. Of course, if the preventer is inside, we’ll need someone to let us in!

When selling a house in the Memphis area, you’ll be competing to be seen amidst the well-manicured lawns of swanky midtown neighborhoods. While this can certainly be intimidating for anyone selling a property, it’s important to note that landscaping is well worth the time and effort when considering your return on investment.

Should I Hire a Professional Lawn Care Service?

In today’s “do-it-yourself” homeowner culture, it’s common for many people to think taking care of their lawn themselves will save them money and be the more rewarding choice over hiring a professional lawn care service. But realistically, that isn’t always the case.

Here at Memphis Landscape, we want you to reap the benefits of the most beautiful lawn possible for your time and money. So in this blog post, we’re discussing the various reasons that you should hire a professional lawn care service like us to maintain your yard for you.

Save Money on Lawn Care Equipment

As far saving money goes, this is one of the biggest benefits to hiring a lawn care service. The money you save by not having to purchase tools and equipment and service or replace them if they break, can be spent on the lawn service itself. What’s more, professional lawn care services have some special tools and fertilizers that aren’t even sold to the public.

Get Expert Opinions for Your Lawn

Members of a professional lawn crew are used to dealing with plant problems and grass issues, and they’re trained in various treatments for any ailing portions of your yard. They know about different types of grass and shrubs, as well as how certain weather conditions and seasons affect your yard, and they have the knowledge and skillful technique to apply the proper care.

There’s no need to spend time studying up on every detail of your yard and experimenting with trial and error when you can hire a professional lawn care service that will know exactly what to do, and can recognize problems early enough to solve them before they escalate and spread throughout your yard.

Besides resolving issues, a professional lawn service can also provide high quality landscape design to make your yard look well-planned, neatly groomed and impressive overall.

        Take Back Your Saturdays

You work hard all week, and you deserve to enjoy your Saturday, or whatever day of the week you have off. Imagine spending your free time with friends and family, and actually having time to enjoy your lawn with a backyard bbq or an afternoon reading on the porch, rather than always spending your time outside working in your yard.

Hiring a professional lawn care service gives you extra time to spend on your hobbies, on other household improvements, or simply on relaxing and rejuvenating for your next work week.

        Avoid Allergies, Sunburn and Fatigue

Many people suffer from seasonal allergies to budding trees and plants or excessive pollen and ragweed. Unfortunately for allergy sufferers, changing seasons are the times when lawn maintenance and care are especially critical.

In addition to keeping your allergies in check, hiring a professional lawn care service helps you avoid bee stings, bug bites, poison ivy, sunburn, general scrapes and scratches, and the fatigue that comes with leaning over to perform yard work or using heavy lawn care equipment.

Count on Consistency with Professional Lawn Care

Even if you’re on vacation, you’re extraordinarily busy, you’re out of town on business, or you’re sick for a week or two, you can rest assured that your lawn will still be taken care of if you hire professionals for landscape management. Letting your yard go without care for too long will just create more work for you when you do have the time to mow or weed, so it’s in your best interest for your yard to be treated consistently.

Receive Thorough Service from Lawn Professionals

In addition to the fact that the work always gets done if you hire a professional lawn service, you can also count on no spot being left untouched. Even if you do carve a few hours out of your busy schedule to work in the yard, you may not have enough time get to all of the tasks that need to be completed. You may even neglect certain areas of your yard that are more difficult to care for, and eventually they could overgrow or become diseased and start affecting the health of your lawn as a whole.

When you hire a lawn care service, your yard – even the “problem areas” – will always receive the thorough treatment it needs. With a whole team of skilled professionals working on your property, your lawn will be cared for quicker and more efficiently than it would be if you tried to do it all yourself.

Our landscape team doesn’t have to stop at just grass and plants either. When it comes to yards, we see the overall picture and provide solutions to drainage issues , as well as fencing installation and repair.

2013 Memphis Most Nomination

Recently Memphis Landscape was nominated for the 2013 Best Landscaper in Memphis. This is a real honor because out of the hundreds of companies in Memphis we are one of the top five! This means a lot to me because when I started Memphis Landscape I had two goals in mind, one to give unmatched customer service and two was to be the type of boss that I would like to work for. I would have never been nominated were it not for a great team of guys working with me.
